To the southeast of Bari, surrounded by mountains on all sides, is the town of Castellana Grotte.

The cave appears in a notarized deed from 917, which shows the deep connection between the town and the cave.
The cave is located a little off the town center of Castellana Grotte, in a southwesterly direction.
Now that there are tours for tourists and many tourists visit throughout the year, this cave was once believed to be a "bottomless abyss" among locals.
To prove that this legend is not true, speleologist Franco Anello investigated the cave and discovered a staggering 3 km long underground passage with stalactites and stalagmites, formed by the erosion of limestone by groundwater. It was in 1938. Until then, the entrance to this cave was used as a garbage dump.
Nowadays, the once huge garbage can is also said to be "the most beautiful cave in the world" due to the existence of the "White Cave" in the deepest part, and it is crowded with many tourists and is a source of income for the town.
