Ristorante Cortesia Puglia Wine Exploration ~All About Puglia Wine~
Introducing Puglia's wineries, wine situation, stories and history related to grape varieties.
The sixth edition was "Botromagno", a producer from Gravina in Puglia, a valley in central Puglia.
Gravina in Puglia, a town southwest of Bari, the capital of Puglia.
In the past, most of the wine in this area was sold to France, but in the 1970s, there was a huge backlash from France, and the shipment volume dropped sharply. It was declining. In 1991, the current owners, the Agostino family, who were lawyers, invested in the producers' cooperative at the time and founded Botromagno. Since then, it has been managed by the Agostino family and has restored production to its previous level.
The area has a DOC (Designation of Origin, now DOP) gravina, which has been passed down from generation to generation and is only recognized for white wines. It is a rare single-owned DOC in Italy.
Until around 2010, the taste of the wine was, at worst, like water, but since then, the trend of bio wine has become stronger worldwide, and the shift to natural cultivation and brewing methods has changed. In the beginning, there was a lot of trial and error in the wine, and the taste varied from year to year, but the taste has become more stable in the last few years, so it is a wine that I would like to pay more attention to in the future.
Not only white gravina, but also red wines have a rather outstanding taste.
Especially recommended is Negro Amaro!
Since it is grown in the fields at high altitudes, it has a beautiful taste with moderate acidity, which is different from the solid Negroamaro of the Salento region. This is one that makes you wonder if this kind of wine can now be made in Puglia.
At our shop, we always have a lineup of both the above white and red, so why not try it once?
